CREATIVE EATERIES AND MAKE-A-WISH SINGAPORE: Wish Alumni Ondeh Ondeh Cooking Class in collaboration with The Little Things

Make-A-Wish Singapore is a children’s charity that grants life-changing wishes for children between the ages of 3 and 18 years old who are living with critical illnesses, building their resilience and confidence to overcome challenges.

Managing a critical illness is an isolating and lonely experience. The wish community is an important part of the ecosystem of support for wish children, many of whom want to remain engaged with Make-A-Wish, beyond the wish. The Wish Alumni initiative provides opportunities for wish children to build their skills and capacity to cope with day-to-day living.

With Creative Eateries being an organization that strives to create memorable experiences with every restaurant that it manages, the chance to share its expertise revealed itself in an opportunity to partner with Make-A-Wish Singapore in support of the Wish Alumni initiative.

Creative Eateries joined hands with Make-A-Wish Singapore and The Little Things to arrange a fun and engaging cooking session for the wish children and their families.

Over 30 participants, including 10 wish children and their families, were invited to Suki-Suki Hotpot at SAFRA Toa Payoh on 27th of May 2023 to create their own ondeh-ondeh – a familiar dessert to many Singaporeans. Typically made of Pandan infused dough, the participants were introduced to a healthier alternative to the dessert, using sweet potato.

Emily from The Little Things led the ondeh-ondeh workshop with a new and improved healthy and child-friendly recipe! The wish children eagerly put on their chef hats, rolled up their sleeves, and excitedly made the delicious traditional treat from scratch.

The wish children proceeded to excitedly knead and roll balls of ondeh-ondeh with the help of their loved ones and staff from Creative Eateries.

After an hour of hard work, everyone got to enjoy a sweet treat which they proudly made themselves. It was heartening to see families bond over their freshly made ondeh-ondeh and exchanging tips – a beautiful way for a closely knit community of families going through similar challenges to bond. Each wish alumni also got to bring home a DIY kit so they can make more ondeh-ondeh with their loved ones at home.

Afterwards, everyone was treated to a heartwarming meal at Suki-Suki Hotpot. Families got to enjoy Shabu-Shabu sliced beef and chicken with Suki-Suki Hotpot’s rich soup bases – such as Tom Yum and Sweet Basil Chicken topped off with a healthy array of vegetables, fish balls, mushrooms, tofu, and more.

It was an absolute pleasure and honour to be able to create a memorable experience for the wish alumni and their families. This event marks the beginning of Creative Eateries’ partnership with Make-A-Wish Singapore. We hope to continue sharing our culinary expertise and experiences by creating memorable experiences so the wish alumni can reach their full potential.
