Project We Care Stay Well @ Admiralty – Solar Toy Workshop

Once again on 27 May 2017, Saturday, Creative Eateries had our third Corporate Social Responsibility event together with the ACE (Admiralty Community’s Experience) The Place Community Club under the People’s Association’s Project We Care, this time around, with Fei Yue Community Services.

That bright Saturday morning brought our Accounts, Human Resources department and Corporate Affairs department together for the sake of befriending some of the younger residents in Admiralty CC, assisting Republic Polytechnic students in helping the children with building their Solar Toy robots.

Interacting and guiding our young friends in building their robots, was a chance for our volunteers to get to know the beneficiaries from ACE The Place CC better. It offered a casual and fun opportunity for our team to work together with the kids, as well as lend them a guiding hand with the trickier parts of the project and encouraging them to stay patient, and remain calm under pressure.

The children were excited to build their own robots, most were able to catch on to the manual guide fast, some even faster than  the adult facilitators! The project was definitely a confidence booster and an achievement for many.

After the completion of their robots, there was a friendly robot race match, after which the workshop came to a close. As it was the start of Ramadan that day, Creative Eateries prepared care packages consisting of a variety of fruits, breads, drinks and of course not forgetting 1 box of dates for each family household to bring it home, accordingly to their culture, three dates are eaten to break the fast in emulation of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

Check out here what our volunteers have got to share!

Hans:
This is the 2nd Project We Care involvement that I have been involved since our 1st engagement in 2016. Being able to spend time with them allow me to think about how fortunate we are, and it makes me happy when we can bring happiness to them through such simple ways. I always believe in “a simple act of kindness goes a long way”.

Angie:
This was the first time experiencing building electronic toys in my life! Through this session I’m able to witness what aspiring determination mindsets the children have, never giving up and continue trying to build their masterpiece. I hope more activities can be organise for them in future and we can contribute our time in joining them to make their weekends an amazing one.

Stephanie:
Helping out in this event has gained me a few rewarding experiences –

  • Waking up early on a Saturday is one of them…
  • Another one would be fixing a space mech (never done one in my life!)
  • Interacting with a 11 year old child is challenging too
  • Trying to keep him focused and encouraging him not to give up despite meeting obstacles

 Yangjun:
This program is a meaningful one for me as I got to interact with the public, especially young children with creative minds.

I helped a young boy named Sunny who is 8 years old with the construction of a robot shuttle toy and Sunny has a lot of patience in crafting the many small parts of the object.

The patience shown by Sunny helped me learn a small lesson in patience myself as I think I would have given up on building if I were Sunny’s age.

The overall event, though small is an enriching one for those who have attended – both volunteers and participants.

It shows that creative Eateries can help support the community not just by the usual monetary donations but to support by interacting directly with the community.

Outlet of the Month – KURO Izakaya

Kuro team

I had my lunch meeting at KURO IZAKAYA, Suntec City tower 3. This was my second time at that place since my client’s office is just above. Three of your employees offered a very commendable service. They were Mae, MJ and Jamie. Surprisingly, the said restaurant was also a part of the same company as SUKIYA where I had a memorable dining experience as well. As somebody who came from the F&B industry, I personally know the employees struggles but these people are really giving an amazing service to your customers. There must be something with Creative Eateries’ culture when it comes to grooming your staffs in terms of customer service satisfaction. I wish your company all the best and I hope that you continue producing incomparable service providers in the industry. – Francees Zaguirre

Nice steak at Barossa! Great service by Chris who offered to give us a bigger table so that we can dine comfortably! He made sure that our glasses were always full! – Irene Y

Fremantle Seafood Market serves the freshest seafood you can taste. Waiters are also friendly. – Alan C

If you are a non-vegetarian looking for steaks, chops or seafood, try Hot Stones at Clarke Quay! The ingredients are garden-fresh, and you know you’re not eating leftovers because you cook it yourself! What a unique experience! The two of us ordered US Black Angus Sirloin and Salmon Steak. The servers were very friendly and attentive, assisting with the cooking process as needed. Dining on the boat was such a relaxing experience – a perfect evening! – Rosie K

While strolling through the bars and entertainment area at Clarke Quay in Singapore I got hungry and found Fremantle Seafood Market. The restaurant is located directly on the Singapore River and I got a perfect table with a view to the river. The waiters were friendly and the order was processed quickly. My food was very nice and I would definitely recommend the place, since it is also close to some good open-air nightlife spots across the road. – Island Hopper

Just had a wonderful dinner tonight at Bangkok Jam Tiong Bahru Plaza. Was served by this wonderful lady named Aunty Nancy Tan. She was friendly & very helpful. We couldn’t decide on the starter dish and when asked for her recommendation, she looked at what was our main course before suggesting us to go for the Pomelo with prawn salad. And yes, It was super YUMMY! To us, what really matter most is not only the delicious dishes, it is the service. Aunty Nancy, we will come again because of your GREAT service! – Cindy

To perk up our thirst and fill our hungry stomach, me and my friend decided to dine at Siam Kitchen Lot 1Good service, good food and the staff are accommodating especially your Mgr named Rosely. I will highly recommend that place to my other friends and see for themselves. Keep up the good work. – Err

Had a dinner with my friend few hours ago at Bangkok Jam Great World City and I would lik etoo compliment the two lovely ladies on duty. We are at the outlet around 7pm, the staff managed to provide an excellent service to us despite the dinner crowd. Staff was so friendly, attentive and was always smiling. We also don’t need to ask or raise our hand to catch their attention because they give us straight away what we need (extra plate to share and table water). Food was great too. Will recommend this place! -Joan

I went to Bangkok Jam JEM for the dinner steamboat buffet and was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of service. In particular, I would like to commend Mr Jason Yang who took the initiative to introduce the options to us and make recommendations. He made my group feel very welcome with his friendliness and was extremely attentive. Our dining experience was definitely improved thanks to him and I would recommend Bangkok Jam to my friends knowing they had such caring staff on hand. – Li Guan

I am writing in with regards to the wonderful food and service provided to me at Bangkok Jam Wheelock Place.  The waiter, Apple, was particularly patient when taking our orders. He was very cheerful and provided good advice with wonderful knowledge of the menu. I have enjoyed my night here and hope that the team would continue to do well. – Kevin

I would like to commend the service effort and initiatives of your staffs during my visit to Siam Kitchen East Point MallI was celebrating the birthdays of my 2 nieces and I somehow felt your staffs, Fabian Phuah, Yanni and Afiq were very helpful in facilitating us with the surprise birthday party for my 2 nieces. They helped with photo-taking, we brought small cupcakes and your staff had the initiative to provide us with candles which may seem like a small effort, but they made it special for us. Thank you and be blessed! – Zai

I am most impressed with your staff Marcus who was on duty last Saturday (6 May 2017) during my lunch at Bangkok Jam Bugis Junction with my family members. He was very friendly and highly efficient throughout. None of us customers needed to wait long for anything and his ability to cope so professionally is extremely commendable. My family and I hope his hard work and efficiency is recognised by the company and we believe it is your blessing to have such a staff onboard. Thank you very much for a memorable dining experience. – Marcia

I was very pleasantly surprised with Patara Fine Thai Cuisine during my first visit to the restaurant. As my out of town guest wanted an early dinner, we arrived a little past 6pm during mid-week. The staff was very attentive. We ordered appetisers, salads and Tom Yum soup. All were excellent especially the tacos, soup and I especially enjoyed the fish cake as they were not oily and came puffy unlike many other restaurants serving shrivelled fish cakes. The Pomelo salad was fresh and not salty which suited my tastes. We ordered many dishes to share for mains. Highlights included beef tenderloin, stuffed chicken wings and steam seabass; which reminded me of my days posted in Bangkok. The only down side was our disappointment with mango sticky rice dessert as mangoes were not sweet even though this is mango season in Thailand. I recommend the restaurant for both business and personal. – Chang

I was at Eat @ Taipei JCube having my dinner with my family today (23/04). The staff there was great! Food was awesome too! Especially Suk Chen and He Xia, they are very friendly! Will definitely go back again. Thank You. – Jia Jun

Good day, I had the most pleasant experience at Eat at Taipei Kallang Wave Mall on Saturday, 15/04/17. As a Manager, she was observant to her surrounding, dedicated to her job. This small simple gesture will make me visit your store more often and of course, sharing what great customer service i have experience. Kudos to her. – Zeng Shu hong

I just had my dinner at Rocku Yakiniku and it was such an amazing experience! I’ve been here 3 times already and I’m still not bored of the food! The service is great too, Samuel Loh was prompt in serving my friends and I, and Yan Hong was quick to serve our food! We had such a great time and I’ll definitely come back again! – Eunice Wee

I would like to highlight the manager, Edward from Tajimaya restaurant at Vivo City for his amazing service. I celebrated my birthday with my friends and Edward made sure that we had an amazing dining experience. I would like to point out that Edward was very sincere and had a personal touch that made my birthday celebration a little more memorable.  My friends were highly impressed with him! – Ms Kan

I was having a dinner at BPP Sukiya with my friends. One of the waitress there, Siew Mei, was giving us a good time there. She was very friendly and kept smiling while she was serving us. She made my family members and myself, felt very welcome. Hope that there will be more waitress that is like her. Thank you very much for Siew Mei’s hard work. Will continue to dine at Sukiya! Have a nice day!

Thought I’ll share a quick note on some great feedbacks on Sam who was waitering at Sukiya plaza singapura last Friday, 24 Feb 2017. He is extraordinary and his patience is remarkable. I was waiting for my partner to arrive and he walked me through the options in Sukiya. He also offered time to think about what soup base I wanted and didnt at all pushed me to order despite the time limit. He actually gave me additional 20mins as I only made my order 20mins after i stepped into the restaurant. He went that extra mile by being observant in what my partner and I needed at the table or what to clear so we had more space.  I hope you can relay the good feedback to Sam as I think this will make his day just like how he made mine! Thanks so much – Cheryl

I’m writing to commend this energetic beautiful and bubbly lady, Madam Soon Yit Kit who was working with her utmost effort that needs to be recognised in the Sukiya Kovan heartland Mall outlet during the lunch period on the 10th March 2017. It was indeed a pleasure getting most of my orders from this lady with a bright smile on her face. – Lim Jyu-Noir Daryl

Brought my friends to Sukiya at Marina Square on 22 mar wed evening; it was their first time there (celebrating an occasion). Just want to commend the service of your staff Kian Hong who helped to guide my friends on their first visit: (1) right from the start, he explained the different soups and recommended options when we could not decide. (2) throughout our time there, he managed the space fast and efficiently: even though there were 5 of us on the round table which could be somewhat cramp, he cleared the emptied plates promptly and asked whether we need top ups on drinks and meat. (3) he was proactive in addressing some queries we had on the process and where to find stuff. (4) at the end of day, he also recommended us to visit the other sukiya restaurants if we are too far from marina square. All in all, Kian Hong made a difference and alleviated my initial concern about hosting friends at sukiya because buffet self help setting can get a little unnerving for big groups. Will definitely visit again.  – Patrick Lee

My feedback for the dining yesterday at Sukiya Bugis Plus yesterday is wonderful. Good services for all staff especially Mr Boon Keat and the auntie who helped to refill the food. Very helpful and warm staff who are funny and makes me feel like home. I went with my exchange student friends which i think it definitely brings good memory to them about coming to Singapore. Thumb up! Will definitely come back again! – Zhi Ting

I was having my lunch at Sukiya I12 Katong Mall last weekend . The staff is very patient in taking our soup orders. They also suggest us to TOP up waygu meat .  When doing the billing , I was also introduce to the membership program.  I will be back often as I really enjoy dining at sukiya Katong. Thank you – Jiahui

I just had my dinner here at Sukiya kallang wave mall. The manager named RAF made our dinner even more enjoyable. He was very accommodating, kind and helpful. He even sliced the pear fruit for us. Raf is indeed an asset to your company and I wish that you can groom more employees like him. Thank you very much! – Francees

Outlet of the Month – Patara Fine Thai Cuisine

I made a reservation in Patara Fine Thai Cuisine on 3 Feb 2017. The ultimate reason was to propose to my Girlfriend and of course enjoy the premium Thai food. It was my first time there and I wasn’t too sure of how the service and dinner would be. I now type this with heart full of satisfaction and still in awe of the service. Christian, Mark and Kim have simply amazed us with Their service. I met up with Christian a day before my proposal date to plan out the sequence. He advised me on the best place to sit, the cutlery set, the choice of meal n also the place to get my bouquet. On the actual day, the 3 beautiful souls planned my proposal in a way that it does not hinder the other customer’s family time. They even went the extra mile to collect my bouquet n keep it fresh and to record my proposal on their phones. They also edited it & sent it to me 2 days later. Food was delicious, presentation of the food was outstanding. Service excellent. I am very grateful to Patara and couldn’t imagine proposing anywhere else.  – Venoth

This is my first visit to Patara Fine Thai Cuisine, surprisingly I have tasted something different that was out of my expectations. I have ordered the Boston Lobster in Black Pepper Sauce and it has an excellent flavour and I can still taste the freshness of the lobster. I have also ordered a glass of house white wine that went well with the lobster. The ambience of the restaurant is good with excellent services, our waitress is polite and well knowledge of food recommendation. I will definitely visit this Restaurant again in near future and will strongly recommends this restaurant to my family members and friends – Tan

I took my elderly aunt and uncle to Patara Fine Thai Cuisine at Tanglin Mall yesterday for lunch to celebrate aunty’s 80th birthday. She is wheelchair bound and I am writing to let you know what a wonderful team you have there. From Christian who helped us change tables when aunt wasn’t comfortable, to his warm service and care, and the professionalism of all the waiting staff there. Thank you and keep up the high standards at Patara Tanglin Mall all these years. It was a nice full circle experience as it was my aunt who introduced me to Patara when you first opened…back in the day where she was well and able to walk. – Ling Hwei

Chris, Zac and Jen provided exceptional service at Barossa Esplanade – we had to rush due to concert and they went out of their way to help. Special thanks to Chris, whose friendly and helpful manner when I first called to make a reservation and Zac, who served our table with urgency knowing that we literally had to “eat and run” for the concert. Came back again for a second dinner, this time, I called to request prior order of our food and Jen was especially helpful to our needs. While food quality is important, I think having a great service team (Chris, Zac and Jen) really makes clients like us want to head back to your restaurant.  Kudos to the team! – Sally

I would like to commend on one of the manager,  Francis Ng, for providing a fantastic service giving me and my friend a wonderful dining experience.  He provided us impeccable service with a constant smile on his face,  always very warm to serve customers and he engages them very well.  when he saw our iced milk teas were empty and we were there for a long time, he gave us free refills despite us telling him we didn’t want them. Hence,  I hope the company could compliment Mr. Francis as his service makes us want to come back for more. I hope others could learn from him as well,  to bring this warm company to greater heights. – Claire & Su Min

I’m here to tell you how I spend my day here at Bangkok Jam United Square. I’ve come to think that united square outlet never failed to disappoint me with their energetic team spirit. Your service crew, Si Min have served us through the years, as I have went to many outlets like Bugis, Raffles City and Wheelock and it is always good to see her in this professional line of her. I truly enjoyed my meal yesterday, thank you Bangkok Jam Bugis & Jay. I will definitely make my visit again. – Jess

I would like to compliment the Bangkok Jam Great World City team for the great teamwork they displayed. Last night I dined with my family and there was 10 of us. We were shown to our table promptly despite having made no prior reservation. Although 1 service staff who was serving another table saw that we needed help and acknowledged it, another service staff filled the gap by quickly coming over to render assistance. Now that is what I call fantastic teamwork. Continue to keep up the great teamwork, GWC Bangkok Jam team! – Kit

PROJECT WE CARE GARDEN PARTY

On 6th August, Creative Eateries organized its first ever Corporate Social Responsibility event together with the ACE (Admiralty Community’s Experience) The Place Community Club under the People’s Association’s Project We Care.

Group Photo with MPOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Following that, Creative Eateries next supported the Project We Care Garden Party to serve children from low-income families, at-risk youths, children from welfare homes and special needs schools, amongst other beneficiaries. This was held on 27 November by the President himself, Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam and First Lady, Mrs Mary Tan on the Istana grounds, a treat for all volunteers and beneficiaries alike!

Creative Eateries supported by “adopting a bus,” setting up a food booth and also had our CEO participate in a fun segment of engagement with other Business Leaders.

For the first segment, “Adopt-a-Bus”, Ms Bernadette Wong led a team of volunteers from Creative Eateries HR Department to pick the beneficiaries up from the Community Club and to guide them throughout the day’s activities. It was a chance for our volunteers to get to know the beneficiaries from ACE The Place CC better.

For the Food Booth sponsored by Creative Eateries, Ms Bonnie Wong together with the catering team set up a station to serve one of our specialty dishes, “Devil’s Curry”. This dish is inspired by Asian and Portuguese culinary influences and received overwhelming response at the event. Curry is indeed the heart and soul of a Singapore’s culture, regardless of race, language and religious.

Finally, President Dr. Tony Tan together with Minister of Prime Minister’s Office & Government Whip Mr. Chan Chun Sing and all the Business Leaders present including our very own CEO, Mr Anthony Wong put up a Mass Multi-Ethnic Drums performance. This performance was certainly the highlight as everyone participated in an interactive and entertaining way, with all beneficiaries given their own mini drum sets to participate spontaneously in the performance.   It was a wonderful day of giving back to the community and a privilege to be serving them on the beautiful grounds of the Istana.

Let us hear some of the experiences from our volunteers:

ACMAD RADIAMODA DILNA, Catering Operations Executive

The event was attended by some corporate volunteers including us (Creative Eateries Group) and the beneficiaries. The President of Singapore Dr. Tony Tan is the Guest of Honour. The volunteers shared skills and expertise with the beneficiary to enhance their mental and social well-being. There were a lot of activities at the event and everyone seemed really happy, but what really caught my attention was the multi-ethnic drums performance. The President, together with the organizers, volunteers, beneficiaries, (I even saw my boss Mr. Anthony Wong,) were all drumming to the beat. At that time, I felt like I wanted to play the drums myself! During the event I was assigned to assist our Senior Manager (Catering), Ms Eileen Chua and the Director of Marketing and Business Development, Ms. Bonnie Wong to serve our Devil’s Curry live station to the beneficiaries, guests and volunteers. I am proud to say that our Devil’s Curry live station stood out from the rest. As a matter of fact, people keep queuing and giving us a lot of positive feedback. I was overwhelmed doing an event inside the residence of the President of Singapore. It was my first time at Istana, but it will be an unforgettable experience for me.

ANGIE LEE, HR Officer

The first volunteering activity that I had participated in with our company brought me a lot of joy over the weekend. It was a memorable event that allowed me to engage and communicate with the beneficiaries, e.g chatting with them casually during the bus trips from Admiralty CC to the Istana. It makes me realise how important it is to focus a little more on people, even a few words or a small caring act makes us feel that we can be so connected even with minimal touch of technology. During our time, together in the Istana, we guided them to enjoy all the games and activities that were available. I found out adults also like to play games too! It was a really enjoyable sight to see them laughing whole-heartedly throughout the day. Not forgetting the children that came along as well, who brought me down memory lane by chatting with them on things that we don’t often speak about as adults. I would like to encourage our colleagues in future to join us for more events like this to make a better community!

EILEEN CHUA YILING, Catering Sales Manager

It was an engaging session serving the beneficiaries the food prepared for them and seeing them enjoy the event so much. It’s fulfilling to see that you brightened up their day with such simple activities and food and wonderful that our company supported this worthy cause.

Creative Eateries x Community Chest – SHARE as One

Starting from December 2016, Creative Eateries will be on board the SHARE as One initiative with Community Chest to cultivate the culture of caring and sharing within our organisation.

SHARE as One is a hassle-free monthly giving programme spearheaded by Community Chest. For every dollar donated by a company, the Singapore Government will match it. These donations will be a continuous source of funds to provide support to a wide range of worthy social service organisations.

In order to choose which cause to support, we have reached out to all through a survey to gather response from our staff. Many heartfelt responses poured in and HELP Family Service Centre has been selected as the cause that Creative Eateries will support.

Here are the recipients who have so generously shared their hearts and who have been awarded a token of appreciation for supporting this project:

CABANILLA MARY JANE ESCALONA

“Personally I hope that our company will support the HELP Family Service Centre. As a single mother, I understand the needs and the challenges they face. Firstly, a single parent shoulders all financial burden which include bills, rental, necessities expenses and education fees of the child. With financial support, a child can receive much better education, thus a better future. Secondly, by providing legal advice to them, they will have a better understanding of their legal rights pertaining to alimony, child custody and support. Through providing affordable childcare services, HELP allows parents to continue working with peace of mind, knowing that their children are well taken care of. I sincerely hope that our company can help them.” – Mary Jane

LEONG WYE FENGwye-feng

“Dementia is a scary disease. It is painful enough not to be able to remember daily things, but to have a hard time remembering your loved ones is heart breaking. The elderly around us have been through so much hard time, to bring their children up, they deserve to remember and realise what a great job they have done. However unfortunately, some are unlucky to have dementia. Hopefully, there will be a solution or cure to dementia.” – Wye Feng

LIM WEI HAO

lim-wei-hao

“Family is the backbone of everyone’s life. It’s like when you are a shark, you need the ocean to survive. They always provide you with strength when you are down, they always tell you to keep yourself up, pump and ready for any challenge!! They are always an inspiration to us, supporting us behind our back. I hope we should all understand how important our family meant to all of us!” – Wei Hao

Congratulations to all the recipients and a big thank you to all of the participants for taking part in the survey. We encourage all Creative Eateries staff to donate generously  as the company will also provide dollar for dollar matching of the total collection to raise the total contributions from Creative Eateries.

Together as a company, we can do our part to make a difference.

In celebration of National Day, the Friendships over Curries, which features four of the most iconic curry dishes from different cuisines was showcased in a cooking demo. The curries draw inspiration from the culinary diversity in our multi-racial society and the perfect cohesion of flavours is symbolic of the racial harmony enjoyed by our nation. Apart from that, Creative Eateries also provided low-income households with a care package consisting of a variety of halal-certified goods such as rice, packet drinks, cooking oil, milk powder and hygiene essentials.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Cooking demo by Head Chef Steven Ng and GM Wilman Ng

Curry – a dish that tastes almost the same across every other, yet there is always a hint of difference that you can taste, and there is definitely one that you would prefer without a doubt. That hint of difference, is the taste of home. The taste of understanding. And the taste of heritage. No one understands your preferences better than your mother. That level of heat or the tricky balance of spices, all that she slowly mastered over years of dedication and care. That is why curry tastes the best home-cooked. No one understands the taste of heritage better than those who inherited not just the essence of the taste, but the spirit of cooking a dish, representative of the heritage we are so proud of. That is why curry, is the taste of home. Uniting all differences and keeping us grounded to our roots, we pay homage to this dish, and our multi-racial yet cohesive nation, by creating a medley of four curry canapes; the Eurasian Devil’s Curry, Traditional Chinese Chicken Curry, Classic Malay Beef Rendang and Spicy Indian Fish Curry.

Eurasian Devil’s Curry – Seducing your eyes before your stomach, this fiery red curry stirs your appetite just by its stunning visual. Invitingly coloured in a spicy red, the Devil’s Curry is a unique twist to your conventional curry. Blending together strong Asian and Portuguese culinary influences, the spice-laden curry is elevated with a splash of vinegar to bring out the harmonious balance of red chillies, shallots, garlic, lemongrass, ginger, galangal and turmeric.

Traditional Chinese Chicken Curry – Unpretentious and hearty, this dish brings out the beauty in simplicity. Smooth coconut milk, curry spice blend and a mother’s secret ingredient, simmered and carefully tended over a gentle flame, the Chinese Chicken Curry is definitely a frequent feature of your childhood. Try out our chef’s interpretation of this toasty dish with the tender flavour-coated chicken and the melt-in-your-mouth potatoes.

Classic Malay Beef Rendang – Savour our dedication to the pursuit of perfection in a bowl with the Beef Rendang “Rendang Daring”. From grounding up our special spice paste, toasting the grated coconut to a golden brown and simmering the meaty broth into thick and decadent curry gravy, taste the essence of the complex flavours condensed into a bowl of hearty goodness.

Spicy Indian Fish Curry – Not forgetting the seafood lovers, the Indian Fish Curry will leave your palette light and mellow. Unlike the conventional curry heavily infused with coconut milk, the clever use of tomatoes in this dish accentuates the sweetness and freshness of our fish, making it the star of the dish without being overpowered by the denser spice flavouring. The use of herbs like curry leaves and coriander aromatizes the curry further with a refreshing hint of zesty and earthy notes.

As Singapore steps into our 51st year, let us take this Independence Day to give thanks to what our forefathers have provided us with and pass on the goodwill by helping those who need a helping hand. Happy National Day to all!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT : Words from the hearts of our volunteers

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Being from the Philippines and also working in one of the non-halal restaurants in Creative Eateries, I have not had the chance to meet customers from the Malay community.  Today was my first time interacting personally with the Malay community and it was an eye-opening experience. Volunteering today was a nice change from our daily restaurant operations; the event that taught myself and the team more about patience outside the restaurant; especially when interacting with kids (which we rarely do). Despite being a shy person by nature, this CSR program propelled me to step out of my comfort zone and I truly enjoyed myself.
– Aileen, Restaurant Operations

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I enjoyed the CSR program and it helped me learn that there are many less fortunate people around us that simply wish for things that money can’t buy – love and friendship. This is something that many take for granted every day. I learnt that life can be as simple as sharing joy and being there for someone in need. Coming from a not so well-off and single parent family, I feel connected to others in similar circumstances. I got the privilege to be friends with  two kids who attended the event with their Grandma. They shared that Grandma takes care of them everyday and they hardly see their parents. The elder sister who is only in secondary school will have to take charge of the welfare and school work of her younger sister; see her to school and pick her up after school.  It takes a lot of will power for a young girl to carry such heavy responsibilities and still she stay positive towards life. I strongly encourage my colleagues to volunteer in this CSR program to learn about compassion and not to take things in life for granted. I hope to be able to consistently keep in touch and build relationship with the same families.
– Eileen, Catering Sales

It was my first time participating in a CSR program and it was indeed an eye opening experience. Varies department within Creative Eateries came together as one to host this event which fostered a sense of esprit de corps in the process. It is in the spirit of giving, that our actions benefit the less fortunate and spreading the message of loving kindness that a helping hand is always available.
– Shaun, Special Projects

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The last time I did community work was back in secondary school, it was a good opportunity and learning experience to understand people from various background. The simple conversation I had with the beneficiaries touched me in a way, to see them really happy just to receive basic necessity and the excitement in their eyes during the simple interactive game. I sincerely hope that our colleagues will be inspired to help the community on a regular basis as it does not require much time to bring smiles to people faces. 🙂

School’s Out – Time to get Out and About!

The long awaited mid-year break is finally here. So what are you waiting for? Throw your books and hands in the air and have some fun! Some say it’s the best time of the year to travel but we say you don’t have to go too far to have a fun-filled day with the family! Here are some ideas that wouldn’t break the bank.

1. Riding the waves at Henderson

 Henderson_Waves

Henderson Wave is an iconic bridge located in the southern ridges of Singapore. Standing as the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore, this 36 metre high bridge is part of a 10km Southern Ridge hiking trail that links major nature reserves and parks such as the Labrador Nature Reserve, Kent Ridge Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark and Mount Faber Park. Here’s how we suggest injecting some fun and keeping you energized over the seemingly daunting 10km trail – Starting your journey from Labrador Nature Reserve, stop by Hortpark for a reinvigorating brunch or lunch break at our French-Italian restaurant Vineyard. Take in the fresh air, admire the scenery, sip on our refreshing drinks and you are all ready to conquer the second half of the trail up Mount Faber Park!

2. Beating the Heat at The Rink

the rink

Want to head out without breaking a sweat? Grab your skates and escape the heat! Touted as the only Olympics sized skating rink in Singapore, The Rink offers various classes for all levels including basic skating, ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating. Another event not to be missed would be their Disco nights on Fridays and Saturdays. Lace up and dance to flashing lights and dance music all night long!

For parents who don’t fancy the cold, seek refuge at Eat@Taipei, located next to The Rink. Enjoy a comforting Oyster Mee Sua or ‘Ma La’ Braised Beef Noodle with a cup of Hot Milk Tea by the bar counter, which oversees the entire rink.

3. Trippin’down Polliwogs Town

polliwog slides

Nothing beats spending quality family time with your young ones! Head down to Polligwogs’ newest branch at East Point Mall this summer break. Watch your lovelies slide down the giant slides and dive into the colourful ball pools. The considerate folks at Polliwogs also designated a resting area for parents who simply want to sit by and relax while keeping an eye for their young ones. (P.S it comes with free internet access!)

Swing by Siam Kitchen for a hearty meal after all that workout goodness and fill your hungry tummies with our best seller, the Butterfly BBQ Chicken (Gai Yang), suitable for all ages!

Celebrate the Special Women in your Life – ways to make your mum feel extra special

Let us all celebrate the one day that connects us all – Happy Mother’s Day!

Our mothers have given up more than we know just to raise us. There is nothing we can do to ever reciprocate the sacrifice and pain she went through to bring us into this world. Unfortunately, we’re all guilty of letting the busyness of life take control of our everyday and we start taking the people closes to us for granted. Be thankful for occasions like Mother’s Day; they stop us in our tracks to appreciate the important people around us. Here are some ways to make your mum feel extra special!

Remind Daddy about Mummy!

Mother's Day_Kiss

(Source: Pinterest)

This is more important than we think, before we came along, there was a special man in her life – your father. Get your father involved in the Mother’s Day plan, arrange for him to present her flowers or give her a thoughtful gift. Though our mothers may tend to think it is a little contrived, well “A” for effort – it is the thought that really counts. We bet she’ll have a big smile on her face.

Pamper your mother Mother's Day_Pamper Your Mum

(Source: Pinterest)

Treat your mum to a relaxing pampering session. Be it a manicure session or a relaxing spa day, there is nothing more loving than rewarding your mum with a rejuvenating boost making her feel like a millionaire bucks.

Functional and practical gifts are the way to go il_570xN.929870352_9it5

(Source: www.etsy.com)

If your master chef mum is always working her gastronomic magic in the kitchen, give her a thoughtful gift to remind her that you appreciate her efforts, time and sweat that goes into heart-warming home cooked meals. A personalised wooden chopping board will make a perfect memento!

Take her on a romantic dinner Vineyard_Interior1

(Source: Vineyard at HortPark)

Romance is probably the last thing on your mother’s mind the moment you crashed the party. Find a restaurant that is romantic with a causal atmosphere that your mum and family will love. This will give her a nostalgic feeling of romantic dates with dad but now with a bigger family and a deeper meaning. Finish off your meal with a romantic and relaxing stroll through HortPark.

Super Mum Shopping Spree

Mother's Day Shop with mum

(Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/)

Take your mum on a shopping spree and bond over picking out the things that she loves, be it that bag she always wanted or even skin care to preserve her external beauty. Great malls like Vivocity have a variety of shops, grocery and even a relaxing sky garden to stroll in the evening. What’s more, the mall is busting with food choices – look out for Mother’s Day Special menu such as the one in Shabuya and Shochu Bar. There is no better way to end off a tiring and fruitful day over heart-warming bowl of hot pot.

Take class together Mother's Day take a class

(Source: www.vacinitybuzz.com)

Picking up new skills at a ripe old age is great achievement unlocked for most. We are all guilty of lacking patience when trying to teach our parents new skills so why not let someone else do it and bond over a hands-on class. Here are some classes you can sign up together on Mother’s Day: Check out these classes: Flower Arrangement or Baking classes.

Dining with Selina Heng

Dining with Selina Heng from Netccentric (Nuffnang and Churp Churp)

Known to few that Netccentric is the parent company behind Asia Pacific’s first blog advertising community Nuffnang and progressive counterpart Churp Churp. We had a privilege of catching up with one of the many warriors working behind the scenes to make the blogging advertising agency what it is today. With us is Selina Heng, Regional Manager at Netccentric who started her career in the rapidly evolving industry just two years ago. The petite and lively lass oversees the operations of Netccentric’s subsidiary companies Nuffnang and Churp Churp across their 6 regional offices; Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia etc. We invited Selina to dine with us at Barossa Esplanade to share with us some of her personal favourite food and what it’s like to be right at the heartbeat of social media advertising.

What is a day like in your shoes? A typical work day in the office feels like hanging out with (a very young dynamic) family. Our office is in a SoHo apartment building and each department takes a unit complete with a working stove and en suite bathroom. We talk a lot. You’ll find us bursting into each other’s units to announce our lunch cravings, breaking out into song when a favourite tune comes on but also sharing interesting articles online and crazy ideas for different campaigns or movements that we want to start. You can say, our office is a very conducive space for brainstorming and creative expression. To us, everything is achievable as long as we dare believe. In all ways. Well, to me at least. Haha!

What’s the toughest and most enjoyable part about being the team behind some of Singapore’s most popular social media icons? Juggling the responsibility of partnering and managing the business and promotional opportunities for so many of these online personalities, no matter how big or small they may be. It’s a huge responsibility to help nurture a person’s development online!  A good relationship with your talents and the support of all our various departments make it work. The best part for me is watching each talent grow in their various ways. Add bonuses are when your talent leaves  thank you gifts on your table or tight hug and sometimes invitations to their weddings or parties! That’s the best feeling ever because there really isn’t a need for them to do that since it’s my job.  Other perks also come from our generous clients and partners in terms of tickets to shows, trips that we can go on with our talents as well as this nice dinner by the water at the Barossa Esplanade with Creative Eateries!

Selina_Food2

If you could describe yourself in one dish, what would it be and why? HOTPOT! Firstly because I love soup. With hotpot, you can add random ingredients into a nice simple soup base, no matter what you’re in the mood for, and it still works! I like to believe I have that effect on myself and people around me. Full of random ideas, thoughts and lame jokes for whatever the mood, and at the end of it all, I leave you with a nice warm comforting feeling. Haha!

If you could ask any blogger out for dinner, who would it be, why and where would you dine? Wow, this is a tough one! I would ask American fashion blogger, Chriselle Lim to a meal at a hotpot restaurant no less! She’s a successful entrepreneur, a mother, a stylist and skincare junkie, I enjoy watching her videos and reading her blog. I’d love to just get some business insights, listen to her views on things and also, just look at her all night. Creepy..but you know what I mean. It’d be nice to see what she eats, how can she stay so slim even after childbirth?!

Below are six situations, name the first dish or cuisine that comes your mind.

It’s Date Night – Japanese

Happy TGIFriday – Bar food! Pizzas, nuggets, fries and everything nice (and fattening).

Hooray, Payday -Japanese Omakase, I’ve been wanting to try it for the longest time.

Nuffnang Party – Chongqing Hotpot is unavoidable. It’s the CEOs favourite, therefore ours.

Girls’ Night Out – Tapas so we can try anything and share everything!

Dinner with Boss – Chongqing Hotpot no less!

What would your last meal on earth be? A variety of local hawker fare. Kway Chap, Bak Kut Teh, Laksa, Mee pok the list goes on…

What’s the most adventurous dish you’ve ever eaten and which blogger would you share it with? I’m not very adventurous with food. I was once “cheated” into eating frog’s saliva and liver because it’s “good for me”. But I’ve willingly tried live Octopus at South Korea’s Noryangjin Fish Market. I would share it with Lian Mei Ting! She’s very animated and game for everything, I can foresee a very fun and entertaining meal with her!

If you could master cooking any dish, what would it be and why? The Perfect Steak – a boring answer but it’s not as easy as it sounds ok..Steak is my fiancé’s favourite dish so it’s always good to have this secret weapon in your back pocket just in case. Oh. Mee Pok would be a fantastic dish to learn too!

If you could open any F&B Business, what would you sell and what would you name it? A cheap good option of everyone’s favourites! A bar that just sells fried chicken, fries, nuggets and beers and would be called, “…..”. Well…the name is still a work in progress.

Which dish at Barossa did you enjoy the most and would recommend to everyone?Honestly, everything hits the spot! For something a little more special, the Blue Cheese Steak Burger! The taste of the blue cheese surprisingly complimented and accentuated the whole dish really well! If you’ve not tried blue cheese before or cannot take the pungent smell, you should try it in this dish instead.
